The application of pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric

Pre-oxidized Polyacrylonitrile Fiber Nonwoven (abbreviated as PAN pre-oxidized fiber nonwoven) is a functional nonwoven fabric made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) through spinning and pre-oxidation treatment. Its core features include excellent high-temperature resistance, flame retardancy, corrosion resistance and certain mechanical strength. Moreover, it does not melt or drip at high temperatures but only carbonizes slowly. Therefore, it is widely used in scenarios with extremely high requirements for safety and weather resistance. The following provides a detailed explanation from multiple core application fields, covering application scenarios, core functions, and product forms:

1. Fire protection and emergency rescue field

Fire protection is one of the most core application scenarios of pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric. Its flame-retardant and high-temperature resistant properties can directly ensure the safety of personnel. The main application forms include:

Inner layer/heat insulation layer of fire protective clothing

Fire suits need to meet both the dual requirements of “flame retardancy” and “heat insulation” : the outer layer usually uses high-strength flame retardant fabrics such as aramid, while the middle heat insulation layer extensively employs pre-oxidized filament non-woven fabric. It can maintain structural stability at high temperatures of 200-300℃, effectively block the radiant and conductive heat of flames, and prevent firefighters’ skin from being scalded. Even when exposed to open flames, it will not melt or drip (unlike ordinary chemical fibers), reducing the risk of secondary injuries.

Note: The surface density of pre-oxidized filament non-woven fabric (usually 30-100g/㎡) can be adjusted according to the protection level. Products with a higher surface density have better heat insulation effects.

Emergency escape supplies

➤Fire escape blanket: Emergency fire-fighting equipment for homes, shopping malls, subways and other places. It is made of pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric and glass fiber. When exposed to fire, it quickly forms a “flame-retardant barrier”, covering the human body or wrapping flammable materials to isolate oxygen and extinguish the fire.

➤Fireproof mask/breathing face mask: In a fire, the smoke contains a large amount of toxic gases. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can be used as the base material for the smoke filter layer of the face mask. Its high-temperature resistant structure can prevent the filter material from failing at high temperatures. Combined with the activated carbon layer, it can filter out some toxic particles.

2. Industrial high-temperature resistant protection field

In industrial Settings, extreme environments such as high temperatures, corrosion, and mechanical friction are often encountered. The weather resistance of pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can solve the problems of easy damage and short lifespan of traditional materials (such as cotton and ordinary chemical fibers).

➤Insulation and heat preservation for high-temperature pipelines and equipment

High-temperature pipelines in the chemical, metallurgical and power industries (such as steam pipelines and kiln flues) require outer insulation materials that are both “flame-retardant” and “heat-insulating”. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can be made into rolls or sleeves and directly wrapped around the surface of pipes. Its low thermal conductivity (about 0.03-0.05W/(m · K)) can reduce heat loss and prevent the insulation layer from burning at high temperatures (traditional rock wool insulation layers are prone to moisture absorption and generate a lot of dust, while pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric is lighter and dust-free).

Industrial filter materials (high-temperature flue gas filtration)

The flue gas temperature from waste incineration plants and steel mills can reach 150-250℃, and it contains acidic gases (such as HCl, SO₂). Ordinary filter cloths (such as polyester, polypropylene) are prone to softening and corrosion. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric has strong acid and alkali resistance and can be made into filter bags to directly filter high-temperature flue gas. At the same time, it has a certain dust retention efficiency and is often combined with PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) coating to enhance corrosion resistance.

➤Mechanical protective gasket

Between the outer shells and internal components of high-temperature equipment such as engines and boilers, gasket materials are needed to isolate vibrations and high temperatures. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can be made into stamped gaskets. Its high-temperature resistance (long-term operating temperature ≤280℃) can prevent the gaskets from aging and deforming during equipment operation, and at the same time buffer mechanical friction.

3. Electronics and New Energy Fields

Electronic and new energy products have strict requirements for the “flame retardancy” and “insulation” of materials. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can replace some traditional flame retardant materials (such as flame retardant cotton and glass fiber cloth)

➤Flame-retardant separator/heat insulation pad for lithium batteries

Lithium batteries (especially power batteries) are prone to “thermal runaway” when overcharged or short-circuited, with the temperature suddenly rising above 300℃. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can be used as a “safety separator” for lithium batteries, sandwiled between the positive and negative electrodes: it has certain insulation properties during normal operation to prevent short circuits between the positive and negative electrodes. When thermal runaway occurs, it does not melt, can maintain structural integrity, delay heat diffusion, and reduce the risk of fire and explosion. In addition, the interior of the battery pack’s casing also uses pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric as an insulating pad to prevent heat transfer between the battery cells and the casing.

➤Insulating materials for electronic component packaging

The packaging of electronic components such as circuit boards and transformers needs to be insulated and flame-retardant. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric can be made into thin (10-20g/㎡) insulating sheets and adhered to the surface of the components. Its high-temperature resistance can adapt to the local heating during the operation of electronic equipment (such as the working temperature of a transformer ≤180℃), and at the same time meet the UL94 V-0 flame retardant standard to prevent short circuits and fires of the components.

4. Other special fields

In addition to the above-mentioned core scenarios, pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric also plays a role in some specialized and niche fields:

➤Aerospace: High-temperature resistant composite material substrates

Lightweight and high-temperature resistant composite materials are required for the engine compartments of aircraft and the thermal protection systems of spacecraft. Pre-oxidized filament non-woven fabric can be used as a “preform”, combined with resins (such as phenolic resin) to form composite materials. After carbonization, it can be further made into carbon fiber composite materials, which are used in high-temperature resistant components of spacecraft (such as nose cones and wing leading edges) to withstand the erosion of high-temperature gas flows above 500℃.

➤Environmental protection: High-temperature solid waste treatment filter materials

In the treatment of high-temperature residues (with a temperature of approximately 200-300℃) after the incineration of medical waste and hazardous waste, filter materials are needed to separate the residues from the gas. Pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric has strong corrosion resistance and can be made into filter bags to filter high-temperature residues, preventing the filter material from being corroded and failing. At the same time, its flame-retardant property prevents flammable substances in the residue from igniting the filter material.

➤Protective equipment: Accessories for special operation suits

In addition to fire-fighting suits, work clothes for special operations such as metallurgy, welding, and chemical industries also use pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric as a lining at easily worn parts such as cuffs and necklines to enhance local flame retardancy and wear resistance, and prevent sparks from igniting the clothes during operations.

In conclusion, the application essence of pre-oxygenated filament non-woven fabric lies in relying on its core characteristics of “flame retardancy + high-temperature resistance” to address the safety hazards or performance shortcomings of traditional materials in extreme environments. With the improvement of safety standards in industries such as new energy and high-end manufacturing, Its application scenarios will further expand into refined and high-value-added fields (such as protection of microelectronic components and insulation of flexible energy storage devices, etc.).
